The model
No fees to publish. No fees to read.
Diamond open access removes charges from both sides of scholarly publishing. Authors pay nothing to submit; readers pay nothing to access. The costs of editing, hosting and preservation are met collectively, by libraries, institutions and public funding, rather than by individual researchers or subscribing institutions.
For a small research system like Ireland's, this matters twice over: it removes a barrier that falls hardest on early-career and unfunded researchers, and it keeps national scholarship under national stewardship.
